Yarn weights explained

From lace to jumbo.

4 min read

Yarn weight means thickness, not how heavy a skein is. A standard system numbers weights from 0, the finest, to 7, the thickest.

For beginners

  • Medium (4), also called worsted or aran, is easiest to learn with
  • Thinner yarns make finer fabric but take longer
  • Bulky yarns knit up fast but can be stiff to work

Chart
