Why make a gauge swatch?

Ten minutes that save a project.

4 min read

Gauge is how many stitches and rows fit in a set measurement, usually 4 inches. It decides the size of what you make.

How

  1. Make a square a little larger than 4 inches using the pattern's stitch
  2. Wash and dry it as you'll wash the finished item
  3. Count stitches and rows across 4 inches in the middle
  4. Too many stitches? Try a bigger needle or hook. Too few? Try smaller

Bonus

Weigh or measure the yarn your swatch used; our yarn calculator uses it to estimate how much you'll need.
