How to read a yarn label

Everything you need is on the band.

4 min read

The paper band around a skein tells you almost everything about the yarn.

Look for

  • Weight, often shown as a number from 0 to 7
  • Fiber content, like wool, cotton or acrylic
  • Length in yards and meters, and weight in grams or ounces
  • Suggested needle or hook size and gauge
  • Care instructions
  • Dye lot number: buy all skeins for a project from the same lot
