Patterns use shorthand. Once you know it, they're easy to follow.
Common abbreviations
- k: knit; p: purl
- ch: chain; sc: single crochet; dc: double crochet
- st or sts: stitch or stitches
- rep: repeat; tog: together
- * or [ ]: repeat the section as directed

US and UK crochet terms differ; a UK double crochet is a US single crochet. Check which the pattern uses.
